Sean Falyon - Settle Down

I gotta meet up with this dude at CI's this weekend, I'll let him explain this cover:

I heard this song went and researched Kimbra listened to her Settle Down EP and said hey I want to rap on this sh*t...so there you have it.

Let's Talk

I just saw the XXl Freshmen list, pretty wack if you ask me. I have no clue who some of these people even are & a couple I do know but still haven't heard enough from them to put on anyone's list. I have no top 10 to look out for because there really is no telling who's gonna be the next big thing by the end of this year. You had Blu, Kid Cudi, Wale, & Charles Hamilton on the cover 3 years ago, where's Charles? & Blu is making random unmixed albums. Don't get your hopes up because you make that cover, word on the streets is A$AP turned XXL down & so did Chip The Ripper (he said it was NOT a good look for him). The best rapper on this list is Danny Brown this year, he's good money but I don't know if he can get that mass appeal from the people, you have to ACTUALLY like rap music, not just stuff on the radio. But props to XXL because they got people talking about them, which I'm sure they set out to do, like that terrible terrible terrible MTV list earlier...keep up the good work guys.

PS: HOW DID ROSCOE DASH MAKE THE FRESHMEN LIST I DIDN'T KNOW "ALL THE WAY TURNT UP" JUST DROPPED!! (yes I really yelled that when I saw the cover)

Ladies First 2.0.

It was a good time had by all who showed up to The Camel last night. Ladies Night 2.0 was a showcase of all female talent from Baltimore to Richmond; singers, rappers, dancers included. Finally got to meet alot of my twitter homies as well as some folks I had not seen for awhile. Erikka J did her thing (killed "Sweet Thing") & Shawn Chappelle rocked it with the LIVE BAND!! Shout outs to Cheyenne Lavene who had half the crowd waiting for her set & she & the homie Joey Gallo killed it in about 15mins because the show started late. I definitely made some good contacts while I was out there & look forward to checking out some people soon.

PS: shout outs to the homie Dre for falling thru, Michael Millions who somehow I missed while I was in there & the rest of the crew who's going to Texas for sxsw in a couple weeks.

129yrs Later....

“Though the colored man is no longer subject to barter and sale, he is surrounded by an adverse settlement which fetters all his movements. In his downward course he meets with no resistance, but his course upward is resented and resisted at every step of his progress. If he comes in ignorance, rags and wretchedness he conforms to the popular belief of his character, and in that character he is welcome; but if he shall come as a gentleman, a scholar and a statesman, he is hailed as a contradiction to the national faith concerning his race, and his coming is resented as impudence. In one case he may provoke contempt and derision, but in the other he is an affront to pride and provokes malice."

Something New

I posted a song last week from one of the members, but I'm not going to lie, I was snoozing on these dudes, 2008ighties a crew of rappers out of Chicago, They have a vibe thats reminiscent of the 90s sound, hard drums & wild samples. After pretty much downloading all of their mixtapes & giving them a good listen while on the job, I felt compelled to share this with you guys. Young cats on some rap stuff, not tryna come up with dances or go pop, just beats & rhymes. One of my boys compared them to Odd Future ( I kinda expected to hear that), minus rapping about dumb stuff. , I love the feel of the videos like they just shot them to have fun. Its some good acts coming up, I just hope people paying attention..there's still hope for rap music.

Big L

Forgive the scatter-brain writing on this one, Its all on the fly:
I first heard Big L when i was 12 on Diamond D's album. When his album dropped in '95 it was on some straight up NYC rap stuff. He used the DeBarge - Stay With Me sample before Big used it on the one more chance remix too. Everyone has heard the freestyle with Jay on the Stretch & Bob show by now (which he outshined Jay & Jay used the "bubble gum" line years later). '99 was a wild year, first L then Freaky Tah like a month later. Its been 13yrs...crazy. RIP

Someone find me THIS Ron Browz please.

R.I.P.

We're losing our voices, I said this after Vesta died. I'm not that good when it comes to the death of artists & go on and an talking about them. I'd rather let the music talk for them, because after all that SHOULD be the legacy they leave behind. Just know that they don't make em like this anymore:

Atlantic Starr - Love Me Down (Jerome Baker 3rd Edit)

This makes me wanna go to a cookout, Rome is running around Mesa Arizona right now & I'm wondering if he went back to his abercrombie & Dave Matthews Band days for old times sake. Check this joint out tho, its real smooth, super duper early 80s. Enjoy

My Friday Soundtrack

I've been awake since 8am & haven't listened to any rap songs today, just instrumentals and beat tapes. Sometimes just listening to the production tells a better story than having someone rap over it. You can create on your own song or vision for the beat in your mind. I remember in high school my dad was like "Turn that garbage off!" I said its only a instrumental, there's no words. Honestly I can do without the rap cliche's these days, most rappers are: A.) Getting high B.) At the club C.) The world's biggest drug dealer D.) Trying to sing E.) Too wack to even tolerate Why should I put my ears & brain through that. Todays Soundtrack is from the homie LaVish out of LA, if you've been down with me from the beginning then you already know I've been supporting dude since I started this site. Its a dope instrumental album titled B*tches Knew (play on the Miles Davis classic). I even gave you guys a little sample up top, I know I posted this album before, but I feel he's highly slept on. The vibe on here is very laid back, but the drums are & sound is still hard & gritty. I hope you guys check it out & enjoy. For some reason I keep hearing the Jungle Brothers "Feel the vibe, feel the vibe...feel the bass" in my head. *Random*

Go Bulls

The Songs On The Radio Are....

DUMB AS HELL. I was gonna write something just now & turned on the fuse's hip hop "hits"...mind went completely blank. Listening to Big Sean & Nicki Minaj's song followed by J.Cole - Workout song just now made me feel like an idiot. This doesn't sound like inspired music & it made me inspired too, to get on youtube & look for something fresh. I'm not even knocking Sean or Cole, because they actually have good songs on their albums, but I also thought that these were the absolute WORST songs on their albums. But they're the "hits", go figure.

Here's something I do like:
Fonz-E Mak - Breeze Owes Me Cash

Ayomari & Tiron - What You Waiting On

Old School Wednesday

Completely different vibe compared to the pic below.
Vawter & Langston Hall in the background.

N Words

Its been almost 2 years since I did one of these. I woke up this morning listening to '93 til Infinity & I was thinking about how the kids these days are wearing snapbacks (they were just called "HATS" in 1993) & going crazy over a pair of J's that came out in '94 & Penny's from '97. Now I have no problem with them mimicking certain aspects from the late 80s & 90's, but lets not take this too far please. I grew up in the 80s & the 90s & I don't recall any teenagers trying to dress like it was 1965 or 1977. I'm sure white people in the 70s would've loved for it to be like "the good ol days", but that's for another time. All I'm saying is that you can appreciate these eras & times, hell you can wish you were older so you could enjoy it; thats cool but its a new day, bring something new to the table & I'm not talking about leopard print skin tight jeans & size 13 shoes on dudes. Rather than try to "bring _____ back", how about you guys create your own path, try to be the first instead of being the next.

Nemo Achida, dope dude from New York who isn't running around with a high top fade or trying to sound like a rapper from the south.

THIS

Hey, what can I say. Can't possibly be mad.

Knowledge Medina & Focus - Never Enough

Numonics is the homie, & he makes dope music so this is getting burn today.

The Park - These Are The Days

Today, Bay Area rhythm section The Park (backing band for Big K.R.I.T., Freddie Gibbs, Alice Russell, Jesse Boykins III and more), unveil the first video for their new three song release “These Are The Days.” Set over a grinding synth-based groove and featuring vocoder and a cinematic guitar jam, the track is a funk-drenched take on life in the U.S. right now. The video echoes the song with a kaleidoscope of visuals featuring working people, classic lyrical themes such as “Let It Be” and “Things Fall Apart”, California sunsets, and the theme of cherishing right now because “these are the days."

Asaad - Origin Of Cotton

I was just talking about how I was bored with rap (I still am), but this is dope, it looks like its black history themed, but this aint.

Love, Peace & Soul

Wild thing is theres an whole generation that doesn't know the importance of this show. Don Cornelius didn't really care for rap, but he helped put many a rapper in every Americans living room Saturday afternoons. There's no black award shows with the Soul Train Awards.

won't be at the grocery store today.
